About Aghajari

Aghajari is a small oil city in Khuzestan Province in southwestern Iran, set in a hilly, sun-baked landscape between Behbahan and Omidiyeh. It is known less as a classic tourist stop than as a working town shaped by petroleum, local neighborhoods, and the wider culture of the warm Khuzestan plain.

The city is reached mainly by road, with connections toward Behbahan, Omidiyeh, Mahshahr, and Ahvaz. Aghajari Airport, also associated with Omidiyeh and the oil industry, is nearby, though travelers commonly rely on larger regional airports such as Ahvaz or Mahshahr depending on routes and availability.

Aghajari grew from a tribal wintering area into an important oil settlement after drilling began in the 1920s and oil was struck in the late 1930s. Its cultural character reflects the movement of workers and families from different parts of Iran, alongside Luri, Arab, and other local influences.

Visitors can understand the city through its oil-company quarters, older residential areas, local mosques, small parks, markets, and the surrounding oil-field landscape, while nearby Behbahan offers additional historic and urban sights. The terrain around Aghajari is dry and open, with very hot summers, mild winters, and a rhythm of life adapted to heat, work shifts, and evening social activity.

Social life is centered on family visits, neighborhood gatherings, sports grounds, local shops, and short trips to nearby towns. Food is typical of Khuzestan, with rice dishes, grilled meats, fresh flatbread, dates, and simple tea-house flavors standing out more than formal restaurant culture. Within the city, movement is usually by private car, taxi, shared local rides, and short walking trips within individual neighborhoods.
