Anuradhapura lies in Sri Lanka's North Central Province, a spacious inland city known for its ancient monuments, broad reservoirs, quiet roads and deep religious atmosphere. It is a major stop in the Cultural Triangle, with a slower rhythm than the island's coastal towns and a setting shaped by dry-zone landscapes, village life and sacred sites.

The city is connected by road and rail to Colombo, Kandy, Dambulla, Trincomalee and Jaffna, making it practical to include in a wider Sri Lanka itinerary. The nearest main international gateway is Bandaranaike International Airport near Colombo, with onward travel usually arranged by train, bus, private car or tour vehicle.

Once the capital of ancient Sri Lanka, Anuradhapura was a center of Buddhist learning, royal power and hydraulic engineering for many centuries. Its UNESCO-listed archaeological area includes the sacred Sri Maha Bodhi tree, Ruwanwelisaya, Jetavanaramaya, Abhayagiri, Thuparamaya and the remains of monasteries, palaces and bathing ponds, while nearby Mihintale is closely linked with the arrival of Buddhism on the island.

Nature is part of the city's identity, from the great tanks such as Tissa Wewa and Nuwara Wewa to shaded paths, lotus-filled water edges and open skies. The climate is generally warm and dry, with seasonal rains, and daily life moves between temple visits, markets, schools, small shops and evening walks near the lakes.

Social life is modest but active, with pilgrimages, festivals, cycling tours, local markets and relaxed dining forming much of the visitor experience. Food is typically Sri Lankan, with rice and curry, hoppers, roti, fresh fruit and simple vegetarian meals widely available. Within the city, travel is by tuk-tuk, bicycle, scooter, local bus or hired car.
