About Arauca

Arauca is the capital of Colombia's Arauca Department, set on the broad plains of the Llanos Orientales beside the Arauca River and directly across from Venezuela. It is a warm, open, cattle-country city, shaped by river life, frontier trade, ranching traditions and the rhythms of the savanna.

The city is reached by road from other towns in the department and by air through Santiago Pérez Quiroz Airport, which provides the main link for travelers coming from larger Colombian cities. Its border position also gives it a regional role in commerce and movement between communities on both sides of the river.

Founded in the late colonial period, Arauca grew as a river port and plains settlement, and it remains closely tied to llanero culture. Visitors can sense this heritage around the cathedral, the central park, the riverfront areas, local monuments and cultural spaces where music, horseback traditions and regional identity are part of daily life.

The surrounding landscape is one of wide skies, wetlands, gallery forests and open savanna, with a hot tropical climate and distinct wet and dry seasons. Life often feels unhurried, with evenings drawing people toward parks, river breezes, cafés and informal gatherings.

Social life is marked by joropo music, dance, cattle fairs, festivals and outdoor recreation, while local cooking reflects the plains: grilled beef, river fish, arepas, plantains and hearty regional dishes are common flavors. Within the city, movement is mainly by taxis, motorcycle taxis, local buses and private vehicles, with short central trips often easy to manage by walking.
