Artvin lies in northeastern Türkiye, on the steep green valleys where the Eastern Black Sea mountains meet the Georgian border. Known for its dramatic terrain, forested slopes and compact city center, it has a distinct character shaped by rivers, highlands and mountain roads.

Access is mainly by road from nearby provinces such as Rize, Erzurum and Ardahan, with connections continuing toward Georgia through the Sarp Border Gate. The closest air access is via Rize-Artvin Airport on the Black Sea coast, followed by a road journey inland through valleys and tunnels.

The city's history reflects the layered cultures of the Caucasus and Anatolia, with traces of Georgian, Ottoman and local Black Sea heritage. Visitors often include Artvin Castle, the old quarter, Borçka Karagöl, Hatila Valley National Park, Şavşat Karagöl, Mençuna Waterfall and the historic churches, bridges and villages scattered through the districts.

Nature defines daily life in Artvin. Summers are mild in the highlands and humid near the coast-facing valleys, while winters can be snowy in elevated districts. Tea gardens, forests, rivers and mountain pastures give the city a quiet, outdoors-oriented rhythm.

Social life is modest but lively during festivals, highland gatherings, rafting events on the Çoruh River and local markets. Regional flavors include corn bread, kaygana, muhlama, silor, honey and dishes made with local greens and dairy products.

Within the city and between districts, transport is provided by minibuses, municipal buses, taxis and private vehicles, while many nature sites are easiest to reach by car or organized tours.
