Baltra Island lies just north of Santa Cruz in Ecuador's Galapagos archipelago, a small, arid island shaped more by travel and conservation than by urban life. It has no traditional town center, but it serves as one of the main gateways to the islands, with open landscapes, cactus-dotted terrain, and views toward the Itabaca Channel.

Most visitors arrive through Seymour Airport, the principal airport serving the central Galapagos. From there, buses connect passengers to the ferry crossing over the channel, followed by road transport to Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz, making Baltra an important link in the islands' transport network.

The island has a notable wartime history, having hosted a United States air base during the Second World War, and its later transformation into a controlled entry point reflects the Galapagos' balance between access and protection. Nearby, travelers often continue toward Santa Cruz highlights such as the highlands, giant tortoise reserves, and the Charles Darwin Research Station.

Baltra's environment is dry and windswept, with low vegetation, lava-stone scenery, and wildlife adapted to harsh conditions. The climate is warm year-round, with a cooler, mistier season and a hotter, sunnier season, giving the island a quiet, exposed feeling rather than a resort atmosphere.

Social life on Baltra is limited to airport services and transit activity, while notable experiences are usually tied to transfers, viewpoints, wildlife watching, and onward boat or land excursions. Local flavors are more easily found after crossing to Santa Cruz, where seafood, plantain dishes, and Ecuadorian coastal cooking are common. On the island itself, transport is mainly by airport shuttle buses, authorized vehicles, and the ferry connection across the Itabaca Channel.
