Baucau lies on the north coast of Timor-Leste, east of Dili, and is the country's second-largest city. Set between sea-facing slopes, old colonial streets and surrounding rural villages, it has a quieter rhythm than the capital while serving as an important regional center for the eastern part of the country.

The city is reached mainly by road from Dili, with coastal travel linking Baucau to Manatuto, Laga and onward eastern districts. Baucau Airport, also known as Cakung Airport, has one of Timor-Leste's main runways and strategic significance, though regular passenger services are limited and most visitors arrive overland.

Baucau's history reflects Portuguese colonial influence, local Timorese identity and the wider story of independence. Its cultural importance can be felt around the old town, the colonial market building, churches, schools and public spaces where daily life blends tradition, religion and civic activity.
