About Beira

Beira lies on the Indian Ocean coast of central Mozambique, where the Pungwe River meets the sea. It is the capital of Sofala Province and one of the country's most important port cities, with a practical, working character shaped by trade, coastal life and its role as a gateway to the interior.

The city is connected by road and rail to inland Mozambique and neighboring countries, especially Zimbabwe, making its port a key regional link. Beira Airport serves domestic flights and selected regional connections, with the city center only a short drive away.

Founded as a colonial port in the late nineteenth century, Beira grew into a commercial hub with a distinctive mix of Mozambican, Portuguese and Indian Ocean influences. Its history can be felt around the old railway station, the cathedral, colonial-era streets and the Macuti Lighthouse, while Praia Nova and the seafront offer a sense of the city's everyday rhythm.

Beira has a warm tropical climate, humid for much of the year, with a rainy season that gives the low-lying city its lush, watery atmosphere. Life often turns toward the coast, markets and open-air spaces, with visits to the beach, football, music, church gatherings and evening walks forming part of local social life.

Food is coastal and straightforward, with seafood, grilled fish, prawns, matapa, rice, cassava and peri-peri flavors commonly found in local restaurants and markets. Within the city, travel is usually by taxi, motorcycle taxi, minibuses known as chapas, private car or walking for short central distances.
