Bird Island is a small city in Renville County, west-central Minnesota, set along U.S. Highway 212 amid open farmland and prairie skies. It has a compact, hometown character, with daily life centered on local services, churches, schools, parks and a modest Main Street.

Bird Island was platted in 1878 and incorporated in 1881, growing with the arrival of the railway and surrounding farm settlement. Its name comes from a former tree-covered "island" in the marshes southwest of town, once known for abundant birds and used by Indigenous people, trappers and early settlers.
