About Bolu

Bolu is a green inland city in northwestern Türkiye, set between Ankara and Istanbul and shaped by mountains, forests, lakes and a calm Anatolian character. Its location on the main east-west route gives it both a practical transit role and the atmosphere of a quiet nature-focused destination.

The city is easily reached by road via the D100 highway and the TEM motorway, with regular bus connections to major cities. Bolu does not have an active commercial airport; the nearest practical options are Ankara Esenboğa, Istanbul airports and, depending on schedules, Zonguldak Çaycuma Airport.

With roots stretching back to ancient Bithynia and later Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman periods, Bolu carries a layered cultural identity. The city center, historic mosques, old streets and local museums reflect this past, while nearby Mudurnu and Göynük add well-preserved Ottoman architecture and traditional town life.

Places to visit fit naturally into Bolu's landscape: Abant Lake, Gölcük Nature Park, Yedigöller National Park, Kartalkaya ski area and Sünnet Lake are among its best-known stops. The climate is cool compared with many parts of Türkiye, with snowy winters, fresh summers and a daily rhythm closely tied to forests, plateaus and outdoor life.

Social life is relaxed, centered on cafes, university life, markets, seasonal festivals, winter sports, hiking, camping and weekend nature trips. Bolu is also known for its culinary culture, especially Mengen's celebrated cooks, as well as local dishes such as keşli erişte, höşmerim and forest-inspired regional flavors.

Within the city, transportation is provided by municipal buses, minibuses, taxis and private vehicles, while inter-district minibuses connect the center with surrounding towns and natural attractions.
