About Camaguey

Camaguey lies in central-eastern Cuba, inland from the northern and southern coasts, and is one of the country's largest and most distinctive cities. Known for its maze-like colonial street plan, broad plazas and quiet residential corners, it offers a slower, more traditional urban rhythm than Cuba's main tourist hubs.

The city is connected by road and rail with Havana, Santiago de Cuba and other Cuban destinations, and Ignacio Agramonte International Airport serves the area, with flight availability varying by season and route. Its position makes Camaguey a useful stop between western and eastern Cuba.

Founded in the early colonial period and later moved inland for protection, Camaguey has a strong cultural identity shaped by churches, ceramics, literature and independence history. Its historic center is a UNESCO-listed area where visitors can wander past Plaza San Juan de Dios, the Cathedral, Teatro Principal, Iglesia de Nuestra Senora de la Merced and streets marked by large clay water jars called tinajones.

The surrounding province includes plains, cattle country and access to beaches such as Santa Lucia, while the city itself has a warm tropical climate and an unhurried feel. Daily life often gathers around shaded squares, markets, cafes and evening strolls, with cultural performances, galleries and local festivals adding color.

Local food is rooted in Cuban home cooking, with rice, beans, pork, chicken, root vegetables, tropical fruit and simple sweets commonly found in paladares and neighborhood eateries. Inside the city, people get around by walking in the center, using taxis, bici-taxis, horse-drawn carts, local buses and private transfers.
