Cartagena lies on Colombia's Caribbean coast, a warm port city known for its walled historic center, sea views, colonial balconies and lively Afro-Caribbean spirit. Founded in the 16th century, Cartagena became an important Spanish colonial port and fortress city, leaving behind stone walls, bastions, churches and plazas that now form a UNESCO-listed historic area.
