Ciudad del Este sits in eastern Paraguay on the Paraná River, facing Brazil's Foz do Iguaçu and close to Argentina, making it one of South America's busiest border cities. The city is connected by the Friendship Bridge to Brazil and by roads leading toward Asunción and the Triple Frontier. Founded in 1957, Ciudad del Este grew rapidly with the construction of the Itaipú Dam and the expansion of cross-border trade. Its cultural identity reflects Paraguayan traditions alongside Brazilian, Arab, Asian and other influences visible in markets, restaurants and everyday street life.

Visitors often combine the city with Itaipú, one of the world's great hydroelectric projects, the Saltos del Monday waterfalls in nearby Presidente Franco, and the commercial center around the bridge. Within the city, movement is mainly by buses, taxis, ride-hailing services and private cars, while walking is practical in compact commercial zones but less convenient across longer distances.
