About Corrientes

Corrientes lies in northeastern Argentina on the eastern bank of the Paraná River, facing the city of Resistencia across the General Belgrano Bridge. It is the capital of Corrientes Province, a warm, river-oriented city known for its relaxed pace, colonial traces, broad waterfront and strong regional identity.

The city is connected by road to Chaco and the wider Litoral region, with bus services linking it to Buenos Aires, Posadas, Formosa and other provincial centers. Doctor Fernando Piragine Niveyro International Airport, located a short distance from the center, handles domestic flights and supports access to the province's wetlands and river destinations.

Founded in 1588, Corrientes is one of Argentina's older cities and has long been shaped by Guaraní heritage, Catholic traditions and river trade. Its historic core includes the Cathedral, the Government House, the Church of La Merced and leafy squares such as Plaza 25 de Mayo, while the Costanera offers some of the city's most pleasant walks, views and sunset scenes.

Corrientes has a humid subtropical climate, with hot summers, mild winters and abundant greenery. Life often turns toward the river, parks and open-air spaces, giving the city an easygoing atmosphere that suits strolling, fishing, boating and evening gatherings along the waterfront.

Social life is closely tied to music, dance and festivals, especially chamamé, a defining local sound recognized as part of the region's cultural soul. Carnival is also a major event, with comparsas, costumes and parades bringing color to the warm season.

Local flavors include river fish such as surubí and dorado, chipá, mandioca-based dishes and regional sweets, often enjoyed with mate. Within the city, visitors can move around by urban buses, taxis, remises and ride-hailing services, with central areas also manageable on foot.
