Cottbus lies in southeastern Brandenburg, close to the Polish border and at the heart of Lower Lusatia. It is a compact university city with a practical, regional character, shaped by Sorbian heritage, green spaces and its role as a service and cultural center for the surrounding Lusatian landscape.

The city is well connected by rail and road, with regular trains to Berlin, Leipzig, Dresden and nearby towns, as well as access to regional highways. Cottbus does not have a major passenger airport; the nearest larger options are Berlin Brandenburg Airport and Dresden Airport, both reachable by train or car.

Historically, Cottbus grew from a medieval trading settlement into an industrial and administrative center. Its cultural identity is closely linked to the Sorbs, a Slavic minority whose language, traditions and festivals remain visible in the region. Visitors can explore the old town, the Brandenburg Pharmacy Museum, the State Theatre, the Wendish Museum and the elegant Art Nouveau architecture around the city center.

The city also offers access to the Spree River, nearby lakes and the developing Lusatian Lake District. The climate is temperate, with warm summers, cool winters and a relaxed pace of life.
