Cumaná lies on Venezuela's northeastern Caribbean coast, at the mouth of the Manzanares River in Sucre state. It is a warm, sea-facing city with colonial traces, busy markets, nearby beaches, and a practical role as a gateway to the Paria Peninsula and Mochima National Park.

Travelers usually arrive by road from Caracas, Puerto La Cruz, Barcelona, or other eastern cities, with buses and shared cars linking the region. Founded in the early 16th century, Cumaná is often described as one of the oldest continuously inhabited European-founded cities in South America.
