About Djanet

Djanet is an oasis city in southeastern Algeria, close to the Libyan border and set beside the vast landscapes of the Tassili n'Ajjer. Known for its palm groves, sandstone formations and desert horizons, it serves as one of the main gateways to the Algerian Sahara.

The city is reached mainly by road from regional centers and by air through Djanet Tiska Airport, which connects it with Algerian cities on scheduled or seasonal services. For many visitors, Djanet is the starting point for guided desert circuits rather than a simple stopover.

Historically, Djanet grew as a Tuareg settlement and caravan point, shaped by trade, pastoral life and Saharan routes. Its cultural importance is closely tied to the Tuareg communities of the region and to the prehistoric rock art of Tassili n'Ajjer, a UNESCO-listed landscape rich in ancient engravings and paintings.

Places to visit are woven into the desert around the city: the old ksar, local markets, nearby palm gardens, and excursions toward Tikoubaouine, Essendilène canyon and the dramatic plateaus and dunes of Tassili n'Ajjer. The surrounding nature defines daily life, with hot, dry days, cool desert nights and a slower rhythm shaped by distance, light and season.

Social life is modest and centered on families, markets, tea gatherings and local festivals, while notable activities include trekking, camping, camel or 4x4 excursions, photography and cultural visits with local guides. Food is simple and hearty, with couscous, flatbread, dates, grilled meats and sweet mint tea common in local hospitality.

Within Djanet, movement is usually by walking for short distances, taxis, private cars and arranged 4x4 vehicles for sites beyond the town.
