About Eldoret

Eldoret is a lively city in western Kenya, set on the high plateau of Uasin Gishu County in the Rift Valley region. Known for its open skies, cool elevation and fast-growing urban character, it serves as an important commercial, educational and agricultural center surrounded by fertile farms and expanding neighborhoods.

Eldoret grew from a small settlement into a major town during the colonial railway and farming era, and today it reflects the cultures of the Kalenjin, Luhya, Kikuyu, Luo and other communities who live and work there. Its global identity is strongly tied to distance running, with many world-class athletes training in and around the high-altitude landscape.

The climate is generally mild, with cool mornings, sunny afternoons and seasonal rains that keep the surrounding farmland green.

Daily life in Eldoret is active but unhurried, shaped by universities, sports, business, churches, cafes and social venues. Local food is hearty and familiar to the region, with nyama choma, ugali, mursik and fresh farm produce commonly found in eateries and homes.

Getting around the city is usually done by matatus, shared taxis, boda-boda motorcycles, app-based rides where available, and private cars, with walking practical in parts of the central business district.
