Encarnacion lies in southern Paraguay on the Parana River, facing Posadas in Argentina across the San Roque Gonzalez de Santa Cruz Bridge. It is the capital of Itapua Department and is known for its riverfront setting, warm climate, orderly waterfront avenues and relaxed, resort-like character.

The city is connected by road to Asuncion, Ciudad del Este and the Jesuit Missions region, while the international bridge makes cross-border travel to Argentina straightforward.
