Hawassa, also spelled Awassa, lies in Ethiopia's Sidama Region on the eastern shore of Lake Hawassa, about 275 kilometers south of Addis Ababa. It is a relaxed lakeside city known for broad streets, greenery, resort areas, and a balance of administrative, commercial, and university life.

The city is linked to Addis Ababa and other southern destinations by road, with regular buses, minibuses, and private vehicles using the main corridor through the Rift Valley. Hawassa also has an airport serving domestic connections, making it a convenient gateway for travelers continuing toward Sidama, the southern highlands, and nearby lake districts.

Hawassa grew in importance in the mid-20th century and became a major urban center for southern Ethiopia, closely associated with Sidama identity, trade, education, and regional governance.
