About Jiri

Jiri is a hill town in Dolakha District of northeastern Nepal, set amid green ridges, terraced fields and cool mountain air. Often called the "Switzerland of Nepal" for its scenery and gentle alpine character, it offers a quieter introduction to the Himalayas than the busier trekking hubs.

The town is reached mainly by road from Kathmandu, with buses and jeeps connecting through Charikot and other settlements along the way. There is no major commercial airport in Jiri, so most visitors arrive via Kathmandu's Tribhuvan International Airport before continuing overland.

Jiri became culturally significant as the traditional starting point for early Everest expeditions, including the classic route taken before Lukla's airport changed trekking patterns. Its mixed communities, monasteries and old trading paths give the town a layered mountain identity.

Visitors can explore the local bazaar, nearby villages, Buddhist monasteries, viewpoints and walking trails that lead through forests and farmland. The surrounding landscape is ideal for gentle hikes, photography and observing everyday rural life.

Jiri has a mild, often cool climate, with fresh mornings, misty hills and a slow rhythm shaped by farming, trade and trekking. Social life centers on tea shops, small eateries, market days and local gatherings, while activities include hiking, cycling and village walks.

Local meals are simple and hearty, with dal bhat, noodles, momos, seasonal vegetables and dairy products commonly found in town. Within Jiri, movement is mostly on foot, with local jeeps, buses and motorbikes used for nearby villages and onward road connections.
