About Kashgar

Kashgar lies in the far west of Xinjiang, near the borders of Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan and Pakistan, where the Tarim Basin meets the Pamir foothills. It is a compact but deeply atmospheric oasis city, known for its old quarters, busy bazaars and position at the edge of desert, mountain and steppe landscapes.

The city is connected by road and rail to other parts of Xinjiang, including Urumqi and Hotan, and Kashgar Laining International Airport provides domestic flights, mainly through regional hubs. Its location also makes it a natural starting point for overland routes toward the Karakoram Highway and the Pamirs.

For centuries, Kashgar was one of the great Silk Road meeting points, where traders, pilgrims and scholars crossed between Central Asia and China. This layered heritage is still visible around the Old City, the Id Kah Mosque, traditional workshops, teahouses and the lively markets, including the famous Sunday livestock market on the outskirts.

Life here is shaped by a dry continental climate, with hot summers, cold winters and wide skies. Beyond the city, visitors often look toward the Taklamakan Desert, Karakul Lake and the high mountain scenery along the road to Tashkurgan, while within Kashgar the pace is best felt by walking through lanes, courtyards and market streets.

Social life gathers around bazaars, food stalls, teahouses and evening promenades. Local flavors include hand-pulled noodles, polo rice, kebabs, naan bread, dried fruits and sweet melons. For getting around the city, taxis, buses, ride-hailing services, walking routes in central areas and arranged private cars for nearby excursions are the main options.
