Khujand lies in northern Tajikistan on the Syr Darya River, close to the Fergana Valley and the borders with Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. It is the country's second-largest city, known for its busy markets, leafy avenues, riverside setting, and practical role as the main urban center of Sughd Region.

The city is well connected by road to Dushanbe, Istaravshan, Isfara, and nearby border crossings, with shared taxis and buses linking it to regional towns. Khujand International Airport serves domestic and selected international routes, making the city a useful entry point for northern Tajikistan.

One of Central Asia's older cities, Khujand was an important stop on Silk Road routes and has long been associated with trade, scholarship, and craftsmanship. Its historic character is best felt around the Khujand Fortress, the Historical Museum of Sughd, Sheikh Muslihiddin Mausoleum, and the lively Panjshanbe Bazaar, where everyday commerce gives the city much of its rhythm.

Khujand has hot, dry summers, cool winters, and a gentler pace than larger capitals. The Syr Darya embankment, Kamoli Khujandi Park, and nearby foothills offer pleasant places to walk, especially in the evening when families gather outdoors and cafes fill with local conversation.

Social life centers on bazaars, teahouses, parks, weddings, and seasonal festivals, with football, riverside strolling, and short excursions popular among residents. Local food reflects Tajik and Fergana Valley traditions, including plov, shashlik, fresh breads, dried fruits, melons, and market sweets.

Within the city, visitors usually get around by taxi, shared taxi, minibus, or local bus, while central areas are compact enough for short walks between many sights.
