About Kiruna

Kiruna lies in far northern Sweden, above the Arctic Circle in Swedish Lapland, and is the country's northernmost urban center. It is a compact but striking place, shaped by mountains, mining, Sámi heritage and the dramatic seasonal contrasts of polar night and midnight sun.

The city is well connected for its remote setting. Kiruna Airport sits a short distance from town and handles domestic flights, especially via Stockholm, while the railway links Kiruna with Luleå, Stockholm, Narvik and other northern destinations. Roads also connect it to the wider Lapland region and Norway.

Kiruna grew around iron ore mining in the early 20th century, and that industry still defines much of its identity, including the ongoing relocation of parts of the city due to ground movement from mining. Its cultural life is equally tied to the Sámi presence, visible in local crafts, language, reindeer herding traditions and regional storytelling.

Visitors often include Kiruna Church, the new city center, the LKAB mine visitor experience, and nearby Jukkasjärvi, home to the Icehotel. Abisko National Park, Kebnekaise and vast Arctic landscapes make the area a base for hiking, skiing, northern lights trips, snowmobiling and dog sledding.

Life in Kiruna follows the rhythm of a subarctic climate, with long snowy winters, bright summer nights and a practical, outdoors-oriented pace. Social life gathers around cafés, restaurants, cultural events and seasonal activities, with local flavors such as Arctic char, reindeer and cloudberries appearing on menus.

Within the city, transport is handled by local buses, taxis, walking in central areas, rental cars and organized tour transfers, which are especially useful for reaching nature sites and winter activity locations.
