About Koh Kong

Koh Kong is a small Cambodian city on the Gulf of Thailand, close to the Thai border and the mouth of the Kah Bpow River. It is quiet, practical and scenic, shaped by water, bridges, border trade and the forested edge of the Cardamom Mountains.

Travelers usually arrive by road from Phnom Penh, Sihanoukville or Thailand via the Hat Lek border crossing, with buses, vans and taxis linking the city to regional routes. Koh Kong has no major commercial airport in the city; flights are typically routed through larger airports such as Phnom Penh, Sihanoukville, Bangkok or, where practical, Dara Sakor.

Historically, Koh Kong has been a frontier town where Khmer, Thai and coastal influences meet, giving it cultural importance as both a trading point and a gateway to Cambodia's southwest. Visits often center on Peam Krasop Wildlife Sanctuary and its mangrove walkways, boat trips on the river, nearby waterfalls such as Tatai, and excursions toward beaches, islands and Koh Kong Krao.

The city's atmosphere is tropical and unhurried, with a wet green season and a drier period better suited to boat travel and beach visits. Daily life moves around markets, riverside restaurants, guesthouses, border traffic and eco-tourism activities such as kayaking, fishing, waterfall trips and jungle outings.

Local flavors are simple and coastal, with fresh seafood, Khmer soups, grilled fish, rice dishes and Thai-influenced tastes easy to find around markets and casual eateries. Within the city, transport is mainly by tuk-tuk, moto-taxi, rented motorbike, bicycle or private car, with boats used for river and island trips.
