About Kursk

Kursk lies in western Russia, on the Tuskar and Seym rivers, and serves as the administrative center of Kursk Oblast. It is a regional city with a practical, lived-in character: historic streets, Soviet-era avenues, universities, theaters, markets and quiet residential districts.

The city is connected by rail and road to Moscow, Belgorod, Oryol and other regional centers, making trains and intercity buses the main ways to arrive. Kursk Vostochny Airport is located east of the center, but civil flights have been suspended since February 2022, so travelers should check current transport conditions before planning air routes.

Kursk is best known historically for its medieval roots, its role as a frontier town, and the nearby Battle of Kursk, one of the decisive clashes of the Second World War. Cultural life centers on the Kursk State Drama Theatre, the Regional Museum of Local Lore, Znamensky Cathedral, Red Square, and memorial sites connected with military history.

The city has a moderate continental climate, with warm summers, snowy winters and colorful transitional seasons. Parks, riverbanks and green courtyards soften the urban rhythm, while the surrounding black-earth countryside gives Kursk a strong agricultural setting.
