About Laos

Laos is a landlocked country in Southeast Asia, bordered by Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, China and Myanmar. Known for its mountains, rivers and relaxed pace, it offers a quieter travel experience than many of its neighbors, with Buddhist temples, colonial-era towns and rural landscapes shaping much of its character.

The climate is tropical, with a dry season that is best for travel and a greener rainy season that brings softer light, fuller rivers and a lush countryside atmosphere.

Popular activities include boat trips on the Mekong, cycling through small towns, trekking to ethnic minority villages, visiting caves and waterfalls, and joining the calm rhythm of local cafes and night markets.

Food in Laos is fresh, herbal and often gently spicy, with sticky rice at the center of most meals. Travelers can try laap, tam mak hoong, grilled river fish, noodle soups and strong Lao coffee, before continuing by train, domestic flight, bus, private car, tuk-tuk or slow boat depending on distance and itinerary.
