About Lubumbashi

Lubumbashi lies in the far southeast of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, near the Zambian border, and is the country's second-largest city. Known as a major mining and commercial center, it combines broad avenues, lively markets, colonial-era architecture, universities, and a practical, industrious rhythm shaped by copper and cobalt wealth.

The city is connected by road and rail to other parts of Katanga and to Zambia, making it an important regional gateway. Luano International Airport, east of the center, handles domestic flights and selected regional connections, serving both business travelers and visitors heading into southeastern Congo.

Founded in the early 20th century as Élisabethville, Lubumbashi grew around mining administration and later became a strong cultural and educational hub. Visitors can explore the National Museum of Lubumbashi, the city's cathedral, old civic buildings, the zoo and botanical garden, and busy markets where daily life is on full display.

The climate is generally warm, with a distinct rainy season and a drier, milder period that makes walking and outdoor visits more comfortable. Life here feels energetic but less overwhelming than Kinshasa, with cafés, football culture, music, churches, student life, and evening gatherings giving the city much of its social character.

Local food reflects Congolese staples and regional tastes, with dishes based on cassava, maize, beans, grilled meat, fish, leafy greens, and spicy sauces commonly found in homes and informal eateries. Within the city, movement is mainly by taxis, shared minibuses, motorcycle taxis in some areas, and private cars, with fares best agreed before departure.
