About Luxor

Luxor lies on the east bank of the Nile in southern Egypt, with the desert rising beyond the river and ancient monuments woven into the modern city. Often described as an open-air museum, it is smaller and calmer than Cairo, yet rich in landmarks, river views and everyday Upper Egyptian life.

The city is well connected by train and road to Cairo, Aswan and other Nile Valley destinations, and Luxor International Airport handles domestic flights as well as seasonal and regional international services. Many visitors also arrive or depart by Nile cruise, making Luxor a key stop on classic Egypt itineraries.

Historically, Luxor occupies the site of ancient Thebes, a powerful capital during the New Kingdom and one of the great religious centers of the ancient world. Its cultural weight is visible in the Temple of Luxor, Karnak Temple, the Valley of the Kings, the Valley of the Queens, Hatshepsut's Temple and the Colossi of Memnon, along with museums that help place the monuments in context.

Life in Luxor follows the rhythm of the Nile, with hot, dry weather for much of the year and especially pleasant conditions in winter. Felucca rides, sunrise balloon flights, market walks, visits to nearby villages and evenings along the Corniche give the city a slower, social character beyond its archaeological sites.

Local flavors are simple and hearty, with Egyptian staples such as ful medames, taameya, grilled meats, fresh bread, dates and sugarcane juice easy to find. Within the city, visitors usually move around by taxi, ride-hailing where available, caleche, bicycle, motorboat crossings between the banks and organized tours for the west bank sites.
