Machu Picchu lies high in the Andes of southern Peru, above the Urubamba River valley near the town of Aguas Calientes. Often described as a lost Inca city, it is a compact mountain sanctuary of stone terraces, temples, stairways and viewpoints, set between steep green peaks and cloud forest.

Places such as the Temple of the Sun, the Intihuatana stone, the Sacred Plaza, the agricultural terraces and the viewpoints toward Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu Mountain reveal both practical skill and spiritual meaning.

Within the area, transport is simple: shuttle buses link Aguas Calientes with the entrance to Machu Picchu, while the town itself is walkable. Access beyond the valley is mainly by train, organized transfer, or approved trekking route.
