About Mafraq

Mafraq is a northern Jordanian city set on the edge of the basalt plains where the settled towns of the northwest begin to open toward the desert. It is practical, spacious and workaday, serving as the capital of Mafraq Governorate and a gateway toward Syria, Iraq and the wider Badia region.

The city lies on important road corridors linking Amman, Irbid, Zarqa and the border areas, so buses, shared taxis and private cars make it a natural stop for cross-country travel. Mafraq has a military air base, while regular international flights are usually reached through Queen Alia International Airport near Amman.

Historically, Mafraq grew around routes used by traders, pilgrims and armies, and its name reflects its role as a junction. The surrounding region holds traces of Roman, Byzantine and early Islamic presence, with nearby Umm el-Jimal, the black-stone "city of ruins," offering one of Jordan's most atmospheric archaeological visits.

Life here is shaped by open skies, dry air and a climate of hot summers and cool winters. Visitors can sense both town and desert culture: markets, mosques, farms, university life and the hospitality of communities long connected to travel and herding.

Social life is modest and local, centered on family visits, cafes, shopping streets and seasonal gatherings. Food is Jordanian and Levantine in spirit, with grilled meats, flatbread, dairy, olives, tea and coffee forming familiar flavors.

Within Mafraq, movement is mainly by taxis, service taxis, minibuses and private cars, with walking useful in central commercial areas.
