About Nis

Niš lies in southeastern Serbia, where routes from the Balkans toward Central Europe, Greece, Bulgaria and Turkey meet. It is one of the country's largest cities, known for its practical urban rhythm, historic depth and easy access to surrounding countryside.

The city is well connected by road and rail, with regular links to Belgrade, Sofia, Skopje and other regional destinations. Constantine the Great Airport serves domestic and international routes, giving Niš a useful gateway role for southern Serbia and nearby cross-border travel.

Niš has been important since Roman times and is closely associated with Emperor Constantine, who was born in the area. Its layered history can be felt at Niš Fortress, the Archaeological Hall, the Ottoman-era Skull Tower and the Čegar monument, while the old streets and central squares show the city's everyday cultural life.

Visitors can move naturally from the fortress and riverside areas to Kazandžijsko Sokače, a lively historic lane with cafés and restaurants, or explore Mediana, the remains of a Roman imperial residence. Nearby Niška Banja adds a spa-town setting just outside the center.

The climate is continental, with warm summers and cold winters, and the surrounding hills and gorges give the city a strong outdoor dimension. Daily life feels relaxed but active, with markets, festivals, student energy and evening gatherings shaping much of its social character.

Local food is hearty and strongly Balkan, with grilled meat, burek, peppers, cheeses and rakija commonly found in traditional restaurants and casual eateries. Within the city, getting around is mainly by local buses, taxis, walking in the central districts and private car for outer neighborhoods or nearby excursions.
