Novorossiysk lies on Tsemess Bay on Russia's Black Sea coast, in the southwest of Krasnodar Krai, where a working port, hillside neighborhoods and sea-facing promenades give the city a practical, maritime character.

It is an important transport hub, linked by rail, long-distance buses and major roads to Krasnodar, the Caucasus coast and central Russia. The city has no operating passenger airport of its own; the nearest air gateways are typically Gelendzhik, Anapa, Krasnodar or Sochi, depending on current routes and availability.

Founded as a Russian fortress in the nineteenth century, Novorossiysk later became one of the country's key Black Sea ports and is widely associated with wartime resilience. Its memorials, museums and monuments reflect this role, especially around Malaya Zemlya, while the waterfront, Cruiser Mikhail Kutuzov, Admiral Serebryakov Embankment and nearby Abrau-Durso make natural stops for visitors.

The surrounding landscape mixes sea air, vineyards, low mountains and open viewpoints. Summers are warm and bright, winters are milder than inland Russia but can be windy, and daily life often feels shaped by the port, the bay and outdoor walks along the shore.

Social life is centered on cafes, restaurants, beaches, wine routes, sailing, diving, concerts and evening promenades. Local flavors lean toward Black Sea fish, Kuban produce and wines from the nearby Abrau-Durso area.

Within the city, getting around is possible by buses, trolleybuses, minibuses, taxis and private cars, with walking especially pleasant along the central embankment and seafront districts.
