About Paysandu

Paysandú is a riverside city in western Uruguay, set on the eastern bank of the Uruguay River opposite Argentina. As the capital of Paysandú Department, it is one of the country's main interior cities, known for its calm pace, broad streets, historic buildings and strong regional identity.

The city is linked by road to Montevideo, Salto and other Uruguayan destinations, while the General Artigas Bridge connects it with Colón in Argentina. Tydeo Larre Borges Airport serves the area mainly for local and private aviation, so most long-distance air travel is usually routed through Montevideo or regional airports.

Paysandú grew as a port and trading center and is remembered for its role in Uruguay's 19th-century conflicts, especially the defense known locally as the "Heroica Paysandú." Its cultural life is visible around Plaza Constitución, the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary and Saint Benedict of Palermo, the Historical Museum, the Florencio Sánchez Theatre and the riverfront promenade.

The Uruguay River shapes the city's landscape and leisure, with beaches, fishing areas and sunset walks along the waterfront. The climate is temperate and humid, with warm summers and mild winters, supporting an outdoor way of life that feels relaxed but active.

Within the city, visitors can move around by local buses, taxis, remises, bicycles or on foot in central areas, with private cars useful for reaching nearby beaches, thermal resorts and countryside attractions.
