About Poipet

Poipet is a busy border city in northwestern Cambodia's Banteay Meanchey Province, directly facing Aranyaprathet in Thailand. Known as one of the country's main overland gateways, it has a practical, energetic character shaped by trade, travel, markets and cross-border movement.

The city is linked by road and rail to Sisophon, Battambang and Phnom Penh, while the Thai side connects onward toward Bangkok. Poipet has no major commercial airport; most international visitors arrive through Siem Reap Angkor International Airport, Phnom Penh International Airport, or airports in Thailand before continuing by land.

Historically, Poipet grew from a modest frontier settlement into a major checkpoint after the reopening of Cambodia's border routes. Its cultural importance lies less in monuments than in daily exchange, where Khmer and Thai influences meet in language, food, commerce and family ties.

Visitors often experience Poipet through its border area, casinos, local markets and nearby pagodas, while wider trips can lead to Sisophon, Battambang or the Angkor region. The surrounding landscape is mostly flat, with rice fields, villages and seasonal greenery under a tropical climate marked by hot weather, a rainy season and a drier, cooler period.

Life in Poipet is active and work-focused, with street commerce, transport services, cafés, gaming venues and evening food stalls forming much of the social scene. Local flavors include Khmer rice dishes, noodle soups, grilled meats, fresh fruit and Thai-influenced snacks. Within the city, people get around by tuk-tuk, motorbike taxi, private car, bicycle and local hired transport.
