About Rize

Rize is a Black Sea city in northeastern Turkey, set between the coast and steep green mountains. Known for its tea gardens, misty valleys and fast-flowing streams, it has a compact urban center and a landscape that rises quickly toward the Kaçkar Mountains.

The city is connected by the Black Sea coastal road, with regular links to Trabzon, Artvin and other regional centers. Rize-Artvin Airport, built on the sea near Pazar, provides direct air access to the region and makes the highlands and coastal districts easier to reach.

Rize's history reflects the wider Black Sea world, shaped by ancient settlements, Byzantine and Ottoman periods, maritime trade and mountain communities. Its cultural identity is closely tied to tea production, local music, highland traditions and a resilient way of life adapted to rain, slopes and the sea.

Visitors can move naturally from the city center and Rize Castle to Ziraat Tea Garden, then toward Fırtına Valley, Çamlıhemşin, Şenyuva Bridge, Zil Castle, Palovit Waterfall, Ayder Plateau and the Kaçkar routes. These places reveal the region's mix of stone bridges, forests, rivers, plateaus and village life.

The climate is humid and rainy, keeping the scenery intensely green through much of the year. Daily life feels close to nature, with tea harvests, mountain roads, coastal walks, rafting, trekking, highland festivals and quiet tea houses shaping the social rhythm.

Local flavors include Rize tea, muhlama, cornbread, anchovy dishes, black cabbage soup and regional pastries. Within the city, transport is mainly by minibuses, municipal buses, taxis and private vehicles, with district minibuses serving coastal towns, valleys and plateau routes.
