Salto is a city in northwestern Uruguay, set on the eastern bank of the Uruguay River opposite Concordia, Argentina. It is one of the country's largest urban centers after Montevideo, known for its riverfront setting, warm climate, relaxed pace, and role as a gateway to the thermal region of northern Uruguay.

The city is connected by road to Montevideo, Paysandú, Artigas, and the Argentine border, with long-distance buses serving the main terminal. Nueva Hespérides International Airport is located just outside the city, though regular air services can vary, so most visitors arrive by bus, car, or via regional connections through Argentina.

Founded in the 18th century, Salto grew through river trade, agriculture, and cross-border exchange. Its cultural life reflects that history in landmarks such as the Cathedral of San Juan Bautista, the Teatro Larrañaga, the Museo del Hombre y la Tecnología, and the riverfront rambla, while nearby Salto Grande adds both a major dam and a scenic reservoir to the local landscape.

Visitors often come for the thermal springs at Daymán and Arapey, but the city itself offers leafy squares, riverside walks, markets, and a calm daily rhythm shaped by warm summers and mild winters. Social life centers on cafés, clubs, football, festivals, and evenings along the waterfront, with local tables featuring grilled meats, river fish, citrus, and regional sweets.

Within Salto, movement is mainly by local buses, taxis, remises, walking in the central area, and private car, with short trips linking the downtown, riverfront, terminal, airport area, and nearby thermal resorts.
