Santo Antao is the westernmost inhabited island of Cape Verde, set in the Atlantic northwest of Sao Vicente and known for dramatic mountains, deep valleys, coastal villages and terraced farmland. Its main settlements include Porto Novo, Ribeira Grande and Ponta do Sol, giving the island a calm, rural character rather than a big-city feel.

Most visitors arrive by ferry from Mindelo on Sao Vicente to Porto Novo, as Santo Antao has no active passenger airport. Connections are therefore usually made through Cesaria Evora International Airport on Sao Vicente, followed by the sea crossing, which is central to island life and travel planning.

The island's history is shaped by agriculture, fishing and Creole traditions, with communities built around sugarcane, grogue production, music and religious festivals. Travelers often explore the Paul Valley, Cova crater, Ribeira Grande, Fontainhas, Ponta do Sol and the rugged coastal roads, where villages appear between cliffs, plantations and ocean views.

Santo Antao is one of Cape Verde's greenest islands, with misty highlands, dry southern slopes and a mild tropical climate moderated by trade winds. Life moves at an unhurried pace, with hiking, scenic drives, village walks, canyon views and coastal viewpoints among the main activities. Getting around the island is usually done by aluguer shared minibuses, taxis, rented cars or arranged transfers, while hiking paths connect many rural areas. In towns, short walks are often enough, but reaching valleys, trailheads and coastal villages typically requires road transport.
