About Seoul

Seoul, the capital of South Korea, lies in the northwest of the country along the Han River, close to the border with North Korea. It is a dense, energetic metropolis where glass towers, royal palaces, shopping streets and quiet hillside neighborhoods sit within easy reach of one another.

The city is a major regional hub, connected by high-speed rail, intercity buses and expressways. Most international travelers arrive through Incheon International Airport, with Gimpo Airport handling many domestic and nearby regional flights; both are linked to central Seoul by rail and road.

Seoul has been a political and cultural center for centuries, especially since the Joseon dynasty made it the capital in the late 14th century. That history remains visible at Gyeongbokgung Palace, Changdeokgung Palace and Bukchon Hanok Village, while modern culture fills districts such as Myeongdong, Hongdae, Gangnam and Dongdaemun.

Mountains frame the city, and the Han River gives Seoul broad parks, cycling paths and open views. Summers are hot and humid, winters are cold, and spring and autumn are especially pleasant. Daily life moves quickly, but cafés, markets, bathhouses, museums and riverside walks offer slower moments.

Social life is lively, from karaoke rooms and late-night restaurants to galleries, baseball games, cosmetics shopping and K-pop-related experiences. Local flavors include barbecue, bibimbap, kimchi stews, street snacks at Gwangjang Market and countless noodle and dumpling shops. Within the city, visitors rely on the extensive subway, buses, taxis, airport rail links and walkable neighborhood streets.
