Stung Treng is a quiet riverside city in northeastern Cambodia, set where the Sekong River meets the Mekong near the borders with Laos and Ratanakiri Province. It is small, low-rise and practical in character, serving as a regional hub for river communities, rural trade and travelers moving between Cambodia's interior and the upper Mekong.

The city is linked by road to Phnom Penh, Kratie, Banlung and the Lao border, with buses, minibuses and private transfers forming the main transport connections. Stung Treng has an airport, but it is not a regular commercial gateway, so most visitors arrive overland or by river-based excursions arranged locally.

Historically, Stung Treng has been shaped by Khmer, Lao and indigenous cultural influences, reflected in local language, food and river life. Its temples, market streets and waterfront areas give a modest but meaningful sense of place, while nearby attractions include the Mekong Discovery Trail, Ramsar wetlands, flooded forests, dolphin-watching areas around the broader Mekong region, and village visits that reveal daily life beyond the town center.
