About Suva

Suva sits on the southeast coast of Viti Levu, Fiji's largest island, and serves as the country's capital and main urban center. It is a busy harbor city with government offices, universities, markets, colonial-era buildings, and a multicultural population that gives it a practical, lived-in character rather than a resort-town feel.

The city is connected by road to other parts of Viti Levu, including Nadi and the Coral Coast, while Nausori International Airport, about 23 kilometers away, handles domestic flights and limited regional services. Most international visitors arrive through Nadi International Airport and continue to Suva by bus, taxi, private transfer, or domestic flight.

Suva grew in importance after becoming Fiji's capital in 1882, and its history is visible in institutions such as the Fiji Museum in Thurston Gardens, where artifacts trace Indigenous Fijian life, colonial contact, and Pacific connections. The city's cultural significance also comes through in its churches, mosques, temples, civic spaces, and the daily mix of Fijian, Indo-Fijian, and wider Pacific communities.

Visitors can move naturally between the municipal market, the waterfront, Albert Park, Government House views, and the shops and cafes around the city center. Suva's tropical climate is warm, humid, and often rainy, supporting lush greenery at nearby Colo-i-Suva Forest Park, where walking trails and freshwater pools offer an easy escape from the urban rhythm.

Social life centers on markets, rugby, university events, live music, cinemas, shopping, and casual evenings by the harbor. Local flavors include fresh seafood, tropical fruit, curries, roti, kokoda, and lovo-style dishes. Within the city, travel is mainly by buses, minibuses, taxis, walking in central areas, and app-based or hotel-arranged transfers where available.
