Taiyuan, the capital of Shanxi Province, lies in northern China on the Fen River, framed by mountains and the Loess Plateau. It is a practical, historic city with a strong industrial base, growing modern districts, and easy access to some of Shanxi's best-known cultural landscapes.

The city is well connected by high-speed rail and expressways, linking it with Beijing, Xi'an, Datong, and other regional centers. Taiyuan Wusu International Airport serves domestic routes and selected international connections, making it the main air gateway for central Shanxi.

Taiyuan has four distinct seasons, with cold, dry winters and warm summers. Parks, riverside walks, and surrounding hills give the city a quieter rhythm than China's larger coastal metropolises, while shopping streets, teahouses, night markets, and cultural performances keep daily life lively.

Local food is hearty and wheat-based, with Shanxi noodles, knife-cut noodles, mature vinegar, steamed buns, and savory snacks forming much of the city's flavor. Within Taiyuan, travelers can get around by metro, buses, taxis, ride-hailing services, and shared bikes, with rail stations and airport links supporting wider travel.
