Vladivostok lies in Russia's Far East, on the hills and bays of the Muravyov-Amursky Peninsula near the borders with China and North Korea. Facing the Sea of Japan, it is a maritime city with dramatic bridges, steep streets, naval heritage and a noticeably Pacific atmosphere.

The city is the eastern terminus of the Trans-Siberian Railway and an important port, with rail, road and ferry links tying it to the wider region. Within the city, transport includes buses, minibuses, taxis, suburban trains, ferries to nearby islands and the small funicular near Eagle's Nest, while central areas are best explored on foot despite the steep terrain.
