About Yangon

Yangon, in southern Myanmar near the Yangon River and the Gulf of Martaban, is the country's largest city and its main commercial center, known for broad colonial-era avenues, busy markets, lakeside neighborhoods and a layered mix of Buddhist, Burmese, Indian and Chinese influences.

The city is Myanmar's key transport hub, linked by road and rail to other regions and served by Yangon International Airport, which handles domestic routes as well as regional flights to major Asian cities. Long-distance buses and trains connect Yangon with destinations such as Bagan, Mandalay and Naypyidaw.

Once the colonial capital and later the national capital until 2005, Yangon remains central to Myanmar's history and cultural identity. Its most famous landmark is Shwedagon Pagoda, a gilded hilltop shrine that shapes the city skyline, while Sule Pagoda, Bogyoke Aung San Market, Kandawgyi Lake, downtown heritage buildings and the riverfront reveal different sides of local life.

Yangon has a tropical monsoon climate, with hot, humid weather for much of the year and heavy rains during the wet season. Green spaces, lakes and shaded pagoda compounds soften the pace, while daily life unfolds through tea shops, street stalls, neighborhood markets and evening walks.

Social life is informal and lively, centered on food, shopping, worship, festivals and family outings. Local flavors include mohinga, tea leaf salad, Shan noodles, curries and sweet Burmese tea. Within the city, travelers can use taxis, ride-hailing apps, buses, the circular railway and short river ferries, depending on route and comfort.
