About Yaounde

Yaounde, the capital of Cameroon, lies in the country's central highlands, spread across green hills at about 750 meters above sea level. It is an administrative, diplomatic and university city, quieter and more measured than coastal Douala, with broad avenues, leafy districts and a strong sense of national life.

The city is connected by road and rail to other parts of Cameroon, while Yaounde Nsimalen International Airport, south of the center, handles domestic and international flights. Its role as a capital makes it a practical base for government, business and travel across the region.

Founded in the late 19th century and shaped by German, French and Cameroonian influences, Yaounde has grown into an important cultural and political center. Visitors can take in the National Museum, the Benedictine Museum of Mont-Febe, the Reunification Monument, lively markets such as Mfoundi, and viewpoints around Mont Febe, where the city's hills and neighborhoods unfold below.

Yaounde's climate is warm and relatively mild for the tropics, with rainy and drier seasons, and its greenery gives daily life a relaxed rhythm. Social life gathers around cafes, restaurants, music venues, churches, markets and football, with local flavors ranging from grilled fish and brochettes to ndole, eru and plantain-based dishes.

Within the city, movement is mainly by shared taxis, private taxis, moto-taxis in some areas, minibuses and hired cars, with walking practical in selected central neighborhoods.
