About Zhangjiajie

Zhangjiajie is a city in northwestern Hunan Province, set among steep sandstone peaks, forested valleys and clear mountain streams. It is best known as the gateway to Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, part of the Wulingyuan Scenic Area, where pillar-like formations rise dramatically from deep ravines.

The city is connected by rail and highway to major Hunan destinations, including Changsha, and Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport serves domestic routes with some seasonal or regional international links. Most visitors arrive through the urban district before continuing to Wulingyuan, Tianmen Mountain or nearby villages.

Historically, the area has been shaped by Tujia, Miao and Bai communities, whose customs, music, architecture and festivals remain important to local identity. Its modern fame grew with tourism, but places such as Tianmen Mountain, Baofeng Lake, Huanglong Cave and the glass bridges around the grand canyons are woven into a broader landscape of culture and geology.

The climate is humid subtropical, with misty springs, warm summers, colorful autumns and cool winters. Daily life moves between a compact city rhythm and a mountain pace, with markets, tea houses, evening walks and performances reflecting a social culture closely tied to nature.

Local food is hearty and often spicy, with Hunan flavors, preserved meats, tofu dishes, wild vegetables and Tujia-style specialties commonly found in restaurants and night markets. Within the city and scenic areas, transport includes buses, taxis, ride-hailing, tourist shuttles, cable cars and park-operated buses.
