Tuvalu is a small Polynesian island country in the central Pacific, made up of low-lying atolls and reef islands spread across a vast ocean area. Tuvalu's history reflects ancient Polynesian settlement, later European contact and its former status as part of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands before independence in 1978. Local flavors are simple and ocean-based, including fish, coconut, taro, pulaka, breadfruit and imported staples adapted to island cooking.

Getting around is easiest on foot, by bicycle, motorbike or local lift on Funafuti, while inter-island travel relies on scheduled or chartered boats, making flexibility essential for exploring beyond the capital.
